Culture and Tradition


The population of Ethiopia is estimated around 114 million (2020 statistics) and it is the second largest population in Africa following Nigeria and Addis Ababa is known as the “Political African Capital”.  Ethiopia included about 80 nationalities each of which has their own culture, tradition and language or accent which distinguishes from one another. 

Ethiopia’s culture is unique in Africa, with influences from Judaism, Christianity and Islam as well as traditional local folklore that combine between the Kingdom of Abyssinia and ancient Yemen and the Kingdom of Solomon the Wise.

 

Traditional and folklore dancing in Ethiopia is unique and is expressed in social occasion such as weeding’s, in which special customs are worn. Different nationalities in Ethiopia are represented by their own culture and tradition.

 

Emperor Haile Selassie’s reign has assigned Amharic as the official working language out of approximately the 80 languages spoken in Ethiopia. Some of most used languages include Tigray, Oromia and Somali and Sidamo to name a few.

 

Ethiopian cuisine is famous for its Injeera made out of Teff which includes essential nutrition and minerals and is often eaten with various vegetables dishes and meat.
